The Problem We Face
This world of ours no longer naturally supports balance. Looking after ourselves has become a separate series of activities that are not integrated into our everyday lives. Well-being isn’t designed to fit around a rigid 9-5 lifestyle - it’s actually pretty hard to find the time to exercise, cook and eat well, give time to our relationships and have fun experiences and of course rest and reset.
In addition, we have given our power away when it comes to our health - we seek external solutions - for example medications or quick solutions.
Holistic Healing vs. Symptom-Focused Approaches
For thousands of years, our ancestors took a holistic approach to health. It is well documented that ancient civilisations in almost every part of the world used a combined approach to well-being including diet, movement and exercise, energy healing and community. The focus is very much on preventing illness with everyday habits. And when our systems become imbalanced, the approach was to look at the root cause of this imbalance which in turn alleviated the symptoms. This holistic approach, which has been around for at least 4000 years, is the basis for all ancient healing techniques, including energy healing.
Today, we have got used to a one size fits all treatment for symptoms but this is a very new approach. Localised treatment of symptoms has only been practiced for around 150 years since the introduction of petroleum based drugs.
When a client comes to me with a problem - indigestion, pain, anxiety, lack of confidence, fatigue - my job is to examine their energy field. I’m looking to find the imbalances that are causing the symptoms. I will then work on those imbalances and most likely, after a few sessions, the symptoms of their problem will improve or go completely. But this is not an isolated treatment - if the client then goes back to doing whatever caused the imbalance in the first place - for example, eating unhealthily, surrounding themselves with negativity, continuing to become stressed at work every day - then this imbalance will return and symptoms will follow.
The Shift in Mindset – Taking Responsibility for Your Health
We need to take back responsibility for our health and resist seeking the quick fix or short cut that we have been conditioned to.
All treatments - whether this is coaching or energy healing - are a part of the solution but without your commitment to making changes in your everyday life, treatments on their own are very unlikely to fix the problem. They can be very helpful in setting you on the right path but ultimately, it’s your dedication and commitment that is going to ensure that you feel better.
To make this shift in mindset, from quick solution to an integrated lifestyle approach, requires intention. Often, decisions to improve our well-being come when we are at a crisis point - when our physical or mental health has hit a point where we can no longer ignore the fact that we are going to have to make changes in order to feel well again. But of course, we can make this decision at any point.
Practical Changes for a More Balanced Life
When we are ready to make changes, we need to decide that our well-being comes first. We are going to have to create the time; the timetable. It's absolutely key that whatever changes that we commit to, fit well and easily into our lives. If you decide to go for a swim everyday but the nearest swimming pool is an hour away, it’s probably not a habit that is going to stick.
My husband works from home and during the dark winter, he alters his working hours. He starts work a little earlier and works a little later but takes 2 hours off in the middle of the day to make the most of the daylight. Otherwise, he literally never sees daylight increasing the chance of a vitamin D deficiency which is so common in Scotland.
Thinking of ways to seamlessly fit well-being into your life will make it much easier, more fun and more likely to succeed. Ask for a change in working hours so that you can fit in a walk at lunchtime every day; commit to a 10 minute workout at home every morning. Set a 30 day challenge to meditate for 5 minutes every day; get up 20 minutes earlier just so that you have time for a quiet cup of tea whilst setting your intentions for the day. All of these practices will have a huge impact if you build them into your life and practice them regularly.
Sometimes, you will need help with your well-being journey. Whatever treatment you go for - coaching, counselling, massage, energy therapy - choose help that you are naturally drawn to. Friends and family will always recommend what worked for them and that might be the same for you but equally, there may be a better route for you. Follow your intuition. What appeals to you? What type of people do you follow online? What interests you? That's likely the direction that will work best for you. Remember - you are in charge of your own health and healing journey. Your path might look very different to a friend's, even if you have the same issues and symptoms.
Reclaiming Your Power
Healing and feeling better requires our active participation - no treatment alone will sustain long lasting change. Don’t wait for a crisis to feel better. Set an intention and take a tiny step each day. Your amazing body holds all the keys to your healing. Commit to accessing that power and taking control of your health.
